The brief was to build 9 luxury environmentally conscious lodges perched high on Whitekirk Hill, each one commanding sweeping views of the “East Lothian Riviera”. Their design would be sympathetic to the surrounding landscape, and they would be built with sustainability and environmental responsibility as the key drivers in their construction.
With a passion for design, innovative “green” technology and with a desire to create accommodation that was a little different, a little quirky, the project wasn’t in the least bit daunting for local developers Whitekirk Hill Ltd. It was an exciting opportunity to offer visitors to North Berwick an alternative place to stay.
However, Covid had different ideas and a project which should have been plain sailing quickly became a labour of love as lockdowns, labour shortages, escalating material costs and delivery and distribution issues all took a grip. A particularly harsh winter was the icing on the cake.
Compromising green credentials was never an option and we are proud that we remained true to our original vision. Hard work, perseverance, and a desire to get the job done resulted in all 9 self-catering lodges welcoming their first guests in July of 2021.
With lodges to suit couples on romantic breaks, families on holiday and larger groups celebrating special events we welcome guests safe in the knowledge that we are doing our very best to preserve biodiversity, encourage sustainability and support the local community.
Our commitment was not just to complete an ethical build but to continuously implement, promote and expand our environmental policy.
